# Connect Claude Code to ChatSyncs

> Step-by-step: add ChatSyncs to Claude Code with one command (claude mcp add --transport http --scope user chatsyncs https://mcp.chatsyncs.com/mcp), sign in through /mcp → Authenticate by pasting your API key on the ChatSyncs page, check it with claude mcp list, and remove it with claude mcp remove. Includes the API-key header alternative. Use when a customer asks how to use ChatSyncs from Claude Code or the terminal, or Claude Code shows ChatSyncs as Needs authentication.

Use ChatSyncs from Claude Code, Anthropic's agent for the terminal and code editors.

## Before you start

* **Claude Code installed and signed in.** Run `claude --version` in a terminal. If it isn't
  found, install it from [code.claude.com](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/overview). Claude Code
  needs a Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, or an Anthropic API account.
* **A terminal.** On a Mac, open the **Terminal** app (Applications → Utilities). On Windows,
  open **PowerShell** from the Start menu. In paths below, `~` means your home folder.
* **Your ChatSyncs API key**, from the
  [API Developer Console](https://platform.chatsyncs.com/api/developer/console).
  [How to find it](/mcp/api-key).

<Tip>
  Already added ChatSyncs on **claude.ai**? If you sign in to Claude Code with the same claude.ai
  account, it's probably there already. Run `claude`, type `/mcp`, and look for it before adding it
  again.
</Tip>

## Connect

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add ChatSyncs">
    In a terminal, run:

    ```bash theme={null}
    claude mcp add --transport http --scope user chatsyncs https://mcp.chatsyncs.com/mcp
    ```

    `--scope user` makes ChatSyncs available in every folder you open Claude Code in, not just
    the current one.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the MCP menu">
    Start Claude Code by typing `claude`, then type `/mcp` and press Enter. **chatsyncs** is
    listed as **Needs authentication**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in">
    Select **chatsyncs**, then **Authenticate**. Your browser opens the ChatSyncs connect page, which names
    the app asking to connect (*Claude Code*). Paste your API key and click the blue
    **Authorize** button.

    You can close the browser tab when it says **Connected as *your business name***.

    Prefer one command? `claude mcp login chatsyncs` does the same sign-in from the terminal.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    Back in the terminal, run:

    ```bash theme={null}
    claude mcp list
    ```

    **chatsyncs** should show **✔ Connected**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Check it worked

In Claude Code, ask:

> **"List my WhatsApp templates."**

Claude Code asks permission to use the ChatSyncs tool, then lists your templates.

## Disconnect

```bash theme={null}
claude mcp remove chatsyncs
```

To forget the sign-in but keep the server listed, run `claude mcp logout chatsyncs` instead.
To cut off every app that has your key, [regenerate it](/mcp/api-key#revoke-access-regenerate-the-key).

## Frequently asked

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Can I skip the browser and use my key directly?">
    Yes, though the key is then stored in plain text in Claude Code's settings file
    (`.claude.json` in your home folder). Replace `YOUR_CHATSYNCS_API_KEY` with your key:

    ```bash theme={null}
    claude mcp add --transport http --scope user chatsyncs https://mcp.chatsyncs.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_CHATSYNCS_API_KEY"
    ```

    Remove the browser-sign-in version first (`claude mcp remove chatsyncs`) if you added it.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can my whole team get it from the project?">
    You can add it with `--scope project` instead. That writes a `.mcp.json` file into the
    project that teammates get through git, and each person signs in with their own key.
    **Never** use the header method with `--scope project`: it would put your key into the
    shared file.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Will it send messages without asking?">
    Not by default: Claude Code asks before each tool call. Be careful with any "always allow"
    choice for tools that send messages.
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

## Gotchas

<Warning>
  * **`claude: command not found`.** Claude Code isn't installed, or your terminal needs
    restarting after the install.
  * **Added it but it's missing in another folder.** You left out `--scope user`, so it was
    added only for the folder you were in. Remove it and run the command again with
    `--scope user`.
  * **Status `✘ Failed to connect`.** Check the URL is exactly `https://mcp.chatsyncs.com/mcp`, and
    that you included `--transport http`. Without it, Claude Code treats the URL as a program to
    run.
  * **Browser doesn't open on a remote or SSH machine.** Use the header method from the FAQ above.
